Interview: Gengoroh Tagame on his new manga series

Posted by atomicboyx On Sunday, October 5, 2014 2 comments

For manga artists in Japan, many hope to debut in one of the national manga magazines, but Gengoroh Tagame has already had his work published for over 30 years, in multiple languages, around the world. Tagame has had an international impact, with the help of the internet over the last two decades, to become Japan's most known prolific gay erotic artist. This month he has his most notable manga debut. In "Monthly Action" magazine, the new series Otou no Otto (My Brother's Husband), kicksoff into the mainstream bookstores and newsstands across Japan. I was able to speak with Tagame-sensei to get some more background on this new series.

Cover art to the first chapter of "My brother's husband"

This month you have a new monthly comic in a mainstream magazine, what is this story about?
The story is about a man named Yaichi and his daughter Kana, who are visited by Mike, the Canadian husband of Yaichi’s twin brother. I'd like to write a story about
modern day gay issues for straight readers.

This is a gay story in a mainstream, all genre magazine, was it hard to get it approved by the publisher? What were the difficulties, if any?
I tried to do it once, several years ago. I was asked by an editor of well-known all genre magazine to draw manga them, and I proposed a story about modern day gay issues. The editor who called me pushed the story to his boss very hard. Finally, his boss, the chief editor of the magazine reject it. But several months ago, they started a new manga about a gay couple by female author who is a best selling Yaoi manga artist in their magazine. I felt I learned many things from this experience, but for now, I'll keep shut my mouth. Maybe you can imagine feeling. Anyway, from this experience, last year, when I was called from the editor of "Monthly Action" magazine, I did not propose a gay story at first. But through the many meetings with him, I felt a possibility to write a gay themed story in their magazine. Then I plotted the story very carefully, especially to think of the good readability for non-gay readers, and proposed it. They were in favor of my proposal very much, so this new story 弟の夫 (My Brother's Husband) started.

The awkward time between the straight twin brother and his brother's gay foreign husband.

You have been mainly creating gay adult themed comics for over 30 years, why did you decide to release this non-adult comic work now?
Actually, I've already released some non-adult comics this past decade. As I said before, I tried the same thing several years ago. But frankly speaking, when I finished writing 君よ知るや南の獄 (Do You Remember The South Island's P.O.W. Camp?), 外道の家 (The House Of Brutes) and 雄心〜ウィルトゥース (Virtus), I felt some kind of a period of my works. And on same time, I experienced trouble with G-men magazine too. Their betrayal hurt my love and trust for gay magazines and the Japanese gay industry, very much. So I started to look for new opportunities for myself. I've already done enough things for gay adult comics, so wanted to do some more new things for myself. To release non-adult comics is one of them. But I haven't thought to quit to drawing gay adult comics.

Many comic publishers release BL (yaoi) manga, what makes yours unique?
Because I'm an openly gay author who has had a very long career. Some of my books were released under a BL comic label, but I always have been thinking that my comic is a gay comic [not boys love]. There are many talented gay comic authors now, but there is no one who has had a long career and released dozens books as I have.

Newsstand the day this issue of "Monthly Action" magazine was released.

You have many female fans in Japan, is this story targeted for them?
As I told before, the main target of the story is straight people who don't know about gay issues well. But of course, I'm coming up with various ideas to make the story interesting for female fans and gay fans too.

“Monthly Action” comic magazine is a mixed genre magazine, how do you feel the general audience will react to this story in Japan?
I wish that they will find something new from what they've never known before.

Do you think readers from outside Japan could relate to this story?
Yes. At least, I wish they do.

Do you have any other stories in other genres (fantasy, sci-fi) that you would like to create?
I'd like to create a historical story, especially one about ancient Greece.

OTAKU MOMENT: Really terrible gay manga

Posted by atomicboyx On Tuesday, August 17, 2010 0 comments

Stopped in at the Shibuya book-off to kill some time. I was checking out the 105yen manga section and found this. Basically it says "The fag report". I flip through it and lulz how bad the manga is. Is about a gay trannie, but gets into such rediculous situations. One scene is when the trannie and gal pal go dancing at the club, and the trannie is cockblocking the guy, who knows she is a he, rips off her clothes on the dancefloor bla bla bla hilarity ensues... not worth picking up.
More pictures after the jump...

CHOU GEI: Ken Koba Tarento

Posted by atomicboyx On 0 comments

I was watching some terrible late night programing with the wonderful tarento groups on a TV show called 1 or 10. The premise is a bunch of challenges that the tatento have to choose 1 or 10, 1 being a smaller but maybe harder task or 10 being a larger but maybe easier task. Ken Koba is a comedian, but in japanese gay stereotype he looks so gay. It didnt help when he started prancing around the studio too!

UFO CATCHER GET! - GLOOMY BEAR Peter

This one is for Peter the kid who raises Gloomy Bear. I won this in 3 tries at 100yen each. On a side note, i was told the creater of gloomy bear was gay! Of course a gay guy would creat a cute violent pink bear! WOOF!

J-GAY MOVIE: Black Lizard くろとかげ KUROTOKAGE

Posted by atomicboyx On Tuesday, March 23, 2010 0 comments

I am currently doing research for a presentation in my University, Japan: youth and deviant culture class. I am doing my presentation on modern Japanese gay society. While researching the view of gays in television and print media I found out about Akihiro Miwa 美輪 明宏 a famous singer and drag queen who has been famous since the 1960's even appearing presently on television as tarento who apparently had had a love affair with famous writer, Yukio Mishima
三島 由紀夫. This man who just oozes sexuality.

This movie is in Tokyo in the late groovy 1960's. We are introduced to
Mrs. Midorikawa, played by Miwa, the woman behind this decadent club where a detective happend to be invited to that evening. As the plot unfolds you have the detectives work intertwined with that of Midorikawa, reveled to be the Black Lizard and a transvestite. Also at one point The Black Lizard shares a kiss with Yukio Mishima! He is such a sexy man!

The character of Miwa is so overly dramatic is such a good gay campy diva way, you want to cheer for her to get the boy at the end of the movie. I havent seen such a campy but excellent movie is such a long time. Apparently it has not been released as a DVD, and only available in 1992 as a VHS release.

Rating: ★★★

Luckily i have found the whole movie avalable on youtube! Check it out below and tell me what you think!

GAY JAPANESE MOVIE ENGLISH SUBTITLES

J-GAY MOVIE: OKOGE おこげ ★★★★☆

Posted by atomicboyx On Thursday, March 18, 2010 1 comments

Tonight i watched the gay japanese movie called OKOGE おこげ. Okoge in Japanese literally means "the rice that sticks to the pot", slang term is a FAG HAG. Okama おかま is literally the rice pot, but slang for faggot. This movie came out in 1992, and very much seemed progressive for its time, because some of the points touched in it are still not common in the modern day japan. Things such as being out is still considered not desirable, most gay men would rather live double lives, rather than live one and be true to themselves. Even getting married and having children, just so it seems normal, but still have sexual encounters with men. For those who might be able to find a copy of Okoge with subtitles, i suggest to see it, its a good commentary/ slice of life of gay Japanese culture.

Rating: ★★★★☆

FROM jfilmpowwow: Okoge - Takehiro Nakajima (1992) The term okoge can refer to two things in Japanese: first, it can mean the crust that forms on the bottom of a pan when rice is accidentally burned or browned. The second slang meaning for okoge is the Japanese equivalent of our North American "fag hag", a woman who enjoys hanging out with gay men as opposed to straight men or women. It's the latter usage that writer/ director Takehiro Nakajima took as the title for his 1992 film "Okoge", which (no surprise) was about woman Sayoko (Misa Shimizu) who meets Goh and Tochi, a gay couple played by Takehiro Murata and Takeo Nakahara), at the beach and quickly befriends them. Sayoko even offers the two men the use of her apartment as a safe and friendly place to meet and soon the trio become inseperable. "Okoge" was one of the very first films, along with Ryosuke Hashiguchi's "A Touch of Fever" (more on that at #1) that helped bring gay issues and gay-themed cinema into the Japanese mainstream. It's original 6-week domestic theatrical run would be extended again and again until it ran in Japan for several months to adoring public and critical praise. Meanwhile overseas the popularity of Juzo Itami's films "Tampopo" and "A Taxing Woman during the 1980's got "Okoge" programmed at a number of films festivals in the West including the 1992 Toronto International Film Festival. Since its release though "Okoge" has been eclipsed by many of the other gay films (some on this very list) and is sadly in danger of becoming a footnote in Japanese and Gay Cinema history. CM

FROM WIKIPIDEA:
Okoge: A term for the burnt rice that sticks to the bottom of a cooking pot, this currently-used word refers to the straight, female friends of gay males.

Okama (お釜, おかま) Literally "a pot, a kettle", this word, always with the honorific prefix "O-", refers to a gay man, especially one who is viewed as effeminate or a drag queen. Can be pejorative. The word originated in Edo period slang for the anus. In current use.

GAY MAG: G-men put a gaijin on the cover! but...

Posted by atomicboyx On Tuesday, March 16, 2010 1 comments

えー!これなに?! G-MEN MAGAZINE @G_menJP put a Gaijin 外国人on next months cover, but hes ugly as fuck! If he was hot OK, but hes NOT! G-men has had foreigners featured inside some of its photo spreads in many issues in the past, and they have been the G-men, gachiガチ, beefy hot types to expect from G-men magazine, but apparently they are doing some feature about Australia in it for their issue 170 special release. The cover model is NOT the style of G-men and the guy isn't even hot! The model type should be more of a BADI magazine model. I think personally think G-men should re shoot a more G-men appropriate cover model before this issue is released!!

What do you think, is the guy hot, or did G-men fuck up this time?

Below is the issue description:

G-men170号記念号は、
初の南半球取材を敢行!
真夏のシドニーをさらに熱くする
世界有数のゲイフェスティバル
マルディグラ・パレードを完全取材。

さらに、シドニーナイスガイズに
